Apple iPod and TV input device-rumours.. |
 |
|
The rumour sites are reporting that Apple will soon show a TV/video firewire 800 device.
From http://macosrumors.com
| Quote: | Apple planning a low-cost Firewire 800 TV-input device? Sources from multiple manufacturers of controller chips and DSPs used in HDTV/TV/Analog Video-to-Firewire conversion devices have reported negotiations with Apple to handle production of the " guts" of such a device, while Apple would supply the enclosure. It would sell for less than $200 initially and gradually be ratcheted down in price over the course of two years -- eventually dropping under $100. The host computer would do as much of the " processing" work as possible in order to help keep pricing down.
Compatibility with a broad range of inputs (Analog, S-Video, HDTV/PDTV, 1/8th-in. Analog Stereo, Dolby 5.1 Surround, etc.) is key, and an 800Mbps Firewire interface would give the system plenty of bandwidth to work with. This, of course, would also in tur n drive demand for Firewire 800-enable systems (new Macs, and add-on PCI/PC cards available from the Apple Store or resellers) which is good news for Apple who is heavily invested in that technology. Because this device is apparently still being bid upon by manufacturers if these reports are accurate, it's hard to say when we could expect to know more, or actually see such a device in the light of day, but we'll be keeping a very close eye on this and have more to say in the next few weeks.

Apple will soon upgrade the iPod products and this will change the pricing structure a bit.
From the same source:
| Quote: | There has been a lot of discussion recently as to whether smaller iPods, which virtually everyone seems to be expecting at Macworld San Francisco, are based on Toshiba's new 1-inch hard drive technology, or Flash Memory. Apple h as been working with both technologies, but we are firmly in the 1-inch HD camp because Toshiba has very specifically targeted the portable music player market with its new ultracompact hard disks and it's an open secret that the company has aggressively courted Apple due to their leadership in that market. Toshiba is very interested in meeting Apple's needs and has no doubt worked to make Flash Memory a less attractive option for near-term introduction.
Nonetheless, as a counter-balance to the plunging prices of its larger 1.8-inch models, Apple does intent to continue shrinking the iPod's chassis through new ultracompact product lines within the expanding iPod family that could expand to 3 or even 4 form factors over the next 2-3 years. This could force a move to Flash Memory or similar fixed storage, as moving-disc devices like Toshiba's 1-inch HDs can only shrink so far while maintaining a reasonable value/performance/storage size proposition. A Flash -based iPod could be less than 18 months away, according to our latest dispatches from California and Southeast Asia.
