U&I Software runs under Rosetta |
 |
|
| Quote: | March 7, 2006. MetaSynth 4, ArtMatic Pro 3.5 and VTrack 1.6 run under Rosetta and reports have been favorable with regards to performance. ArtMatic Voyager 1.1 does not currently work in Rosetta. An upcoming update of Voyager will be Rosetta compatible. Our applications are not yet Intel-native, and we do not yet have a timeline to announce for Intel-native versions of our software.
We are currently further evaluating the compatibility of our software with the new Intel-based Macs. We do not yet have enough information to provide a full compatibility report yet although preliminary reports look good for all the software except ArtMatic Voyager. If you have an Intel-Mac at your disposal, you should download the demo version of the software and try it. We will post a message to our site when we have done more thorough testing.
A user reports that the current MacBook Pro and Intel iMac can preview about 192 voices realtime which is almost twice as many voices as a 600MHz G3 can preview. This is fewer voices than the current Dual G5 machines can preview, however. |

not surprising really as U&I don't develope at all for Windows. They are a Mac only company. _________________ ACHTUNG!

Which makes it even stranger that they only run in Rosetta. Had they used XCode and Cocoa (admittedly with excessive dynamic typing), then you could have had Intel native apps with one click.
Being a "Mac" company rather than a "Mac OS X" company does not mean good things, it means "issues". _________________ -- Say "&Eth;onne hit wæs hrenig weðer" |

Metasynth runs fine in OSX on this IBM-Mac- so I don't really know where you are coming from _________________ ACHTUNG!

Well, yes.. and many companies haven´t gotten around to rebuild their code to the world of XCODE . This is too bad. Apple has put some effort into that one and it is reportedly a great coding enviroment. I dunno, perhaps Shania Twain told them to skip xcode. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Anything that is well written and tested will run well on its native platform, this is a simple matter of good programming technique.
The problem is that Apple's approach to supporting developers is allowing them to use legacy techniques (i.e. from OS 9) on an essentially incompatible system, consequently they -- for example -- incorporate extensions and type/creator codes in one and the same operating system. Idiotic.
Porting an application to a new framework takes time and energy, but not doing so in the case of a now five-year-old operating system is stupid.
ProjectBuilder and latterly XCode provide excellent tools for creating good Mac-specific software, but many developers (essentially those that produce software that is ported to other platforms -- among others Adobe) still use dev tools like Code Warrior, as well as a few deviants from the good old days of system 7.
XCode provides Cocoa, which provides a simple way of producing GUI-apps with very little coding, making development and porting extremely efficient. There are no really good reasons for sticking with inefficient C++ libraries when faced with a better solution that a compentent C++ programmer wouldn't need ten days to get to grips with.
This becomes even clearer when you note that a properly programmed* Cocoa app can be ported to Intel by checking the Intel build option.
*Dynamic typing would be necessary, as I said before. _________________ -- Say "&Eth;onne hit wæs hrenig weðer" |
