I had my NMG2 plugged into the wall (power) and the computer (via USB) with the NMG2 software open. I turned on the NMG2 and the software said that a Major Error occurred. The patches were not accessible and the software was just blank. I looked at the NMG2 and all the LCD's were blank (not totally blank, but the top row of the LCD's were all filled in with shaded squares).

Has anyone ever heard of this?

If not, is there any buttons on the NMG2 that will set it back to factory presets or something? it looks like the NMG2 is frozen every time i turn it on... even standalone, not plugged into the computer, it does the same thing with the blank LCD's.

If anyone can help me out, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Ben

I suppose you could try reloading the system software into the G2. Look at the procedure described starting on page 140 of the manual.

Thanks for your reply however when I try to update the OS from the computer, the Updater says there is no Nord Modular G2 plugged in to the computer... so the computer doesn't even recognize the system. When i try and update the Nord manually, by holding Store + Performance Mode, nothing happens.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Ben

I have had a major error (but no general or captain error) a long time ago. It seemed to be connected to a patch being loaded somehow.

Does this happen a lot?

When you open up the synth, things will look a bit like attached image. The red arrow points to the basic program memory, think it's a FLASH thingie but it could be an EEPROM as well. Any way, when that one is not properly seated it would result in serious errors, maybe you could check for that.

yes, this issues possibly being associated with the loading of a patch was one of my assumptions and the guy at the music store where i purchased the G2 also shared this idea; however we ended up just shipping the nord back to Clavia for repairs.

Blue Hell, thanks for your input but i just picked up the Nord and haven't yet thought about taking anything apart.

The problem i was originally having had developed into this (below) before i decided to send away to Clavia.

---> the problem of the Synth giving me a "Major Error" in the software screen on my computer and displaying grey filled in boxes in the LCD screens on my Nord was the original problem

---> now what was happening was if i gave the Nord a few hours to "rest" i could turn it on and load patches and play with them however after about 2 to 3 minutes of playing, the nord would freeze then go back to the blank grey boxes when it was turned on (then i would have to let it rest for another few hours and i would keep repeating this process...)

Ill keep you all apprised of the diagnosis when it comes back to me from Clavia.

Ben

Starts to look like a bad solder joint somewhere, think it was a wise decision to send it in. Hope it will turn out well!

I bought my G2 Engine ex-demo from Turnkey about 9 months. I was getting the 'Major Error!' message (and all the same symptoms that go with it) once or twice within the first month or two after I received it. It became more frequent as time went on, but I found that usually I could unplug and re-plug in the USB cable and turn it off, then on again and then it would work again. Other times it would require a little more patience, but now I can't get the computer to find the engine at all. Regardless of how long I leave it, there's no USB communication.

Anyway know how much this repair costs?

Cheers.

ok, just got the NMG2 back and i have yet to find out what they found and fixed so ill keep you guys posted on what happened as the info comes in.

but for now... it seems that who ever fixed my NMG2 has assigned the selection criteria (when using the rotary dial and the up/down navigator)onto what category the patches are in... (ie. when using the rotary dial, you can scroll thru all the synth patches, then pg up will take me to all the audio-in and i can use the rotary dial to go thru all the audio-in patches etc.)

i want to go back to the original selection criteria ie: slot 1 - rotary dial goes thru all the patches loaded in this slot etc.

anyone?

thanks

ben.

I think ... re. sorting ... in the editor type CTRL+B to pop up the patch browser, go to the patch tab, do a right mouse click in it and select name instead of category.

Hold shift + down button (labeled 'sort mode'). It cycles through 3 different sort modes (alphabetic patch name order, bank number, patch category)

Good to know that they got your G2 up and running again! Did they charge you for any parts and/or labor?

no charges at all. it was gone for 8 months and i went thru Long and Mcquade (where i purchased the NMG2) and they hooked me up with a brand new NMG2 to use in the interim - also for free.

Eight months! Shocked Good thing that they gave you a G2 to use in the mean time.

I'm still curious to know what they did to fix it.

I like Long & McQuade ... they have a 30 day return policy, which is 3 more weeks than Tom Lee...
