Subject description: anyone ever got these to work?

I have just built both guitar effect projects from the 1980 June/July edition of Everday Electronics, the autophase and autowah. Neither of them can I get to operate, has anyone attempted these in the past and if so are there any mods I need to make?

I built those two units at publication time and both were useless, better to stick to Electroharmonix stuff.

Just out of curiosity - I'd love to see the schematics of these....I wonder if you would post them here?

Stephen - Was the effect these circuits produced useless - or did you have the same problem getting them to work?

Thanks!

Bruce

Laughing

You Americans have never had it so good! As a whole, many EM circuits published in British magazines -especially EE- the 'Beano' of electronic magazines, were shite. ETI otoh was much better (in 'the good 'ol days). Elektor, the Dutch-based mag, even better than ETI in my opinion. Building these things was one thing, getting them to work was another!

The synthesisers were okay (or at least better) though, and were a kind of inspirational lifeline to us, because the Moog was a very rare beast that only very rich rock stars could afford! Smile

IMO, Stephen is right. Don't waste your time on these old cranks.

You might possibly read the word "simple" in the article a number of times, which speaks volumes. It was a long time ago, but I'd say they were noisy, and poor sounding. The trouble was that they paid poorly so it's not surprising that the circuits were crap.

It can also be due to problems with components not being quite what they should be. In particular when you are using CMOS 4xxx chips in analogue ways. You have to pay attention to which manufacturer the original designer used and the A/B/C/U/etc letters on the end. Unfortunately sometimes the docs don't include this info. All 4069s behave pretty much the same from a digital point of view, but there is a huge variation in their analogue behaviour from one version to the next and even to a certain extent from batch to batch. So often it can be hard to get these things working.
