So I dug my old Nord Modular key out this week and tried to get it running smoothly again. Right now I'm hoping to get it working with OS X Leopard (10.5.6)

I purchased a brand new M-Audio MidiSport 2x2 and midi cables. I had been using an older MidiSport which seemed to never want to connect, this new one works much better.

However, after a few minutes of editing with Nomad, I'll change a connection and it seems like I've crashed my NM hardware - I have to power off, power on, then reconnect.

I would really like to continue using this synth but if I can't find a reliable way to run the editor, I'm afraid I'm going to have to sell it and get something more modern like a Virus TIv2 with excellent PC communication.

Anyway, to continue using the NM1 with editor, what should I do? Has anyone had success running the original editor in perhaps a small windows 98 virtual machine? Should I try a different MIDI interface first? One thing I've noticed about Nomad is that the knob turns at times have a substantial latency, like the software or perhaps the hardware just cant keep up with the midi traffic.

Thanks,
Trey

from what ive read here on the forum, i think the majority of people here are still using the last nord software editor. (correct me if im wrong!)

at least here, its still crashy, but ive only barely got nomad to work a couple times.. . im hoping someday it will become a reliable solution, but until then.

(im on a mbp, 10.5.5 with a edirol um-2ex by the way).

Hmm sounds like we have similar setups. Which version of the editor are you using exactly? And how does yours crash? I saw that clavia had released what they called a "beta" for OSX.. I tried that and did experience a crash here or there.. not sure if it was a lost connection, a software crash, or a NM hardware crash... I guess either way, you're saying that basically there is no way to reliably run the editor anymore on 10.5?

hmm - the one im running is called "EditorMacOSXD5." and ive have it working pretty good now = only crashes every now and then (once a month?).

some things ive noticed that make it run smoother (and less crashier):

- the left hand USB slot seems friendlier (pre uni-body mbp)
- too much right clicking in the editor is bad for it
- sometimes patches can make the editor crash (because of how i make them, overloading cpu or whatever - this i blame more on my dodgy patching).

for me its been worth it, after working out those frustrating kinks. but to have a nice, smooth looking and running app like nomad should be would make it all the more fun.

Huh - do you think you could post that EditorMacOSXD5 somewhere? I am pretty sure that is not the one I downloaded from clavia.. maybe it snuck onto the forum or a mailing list at some point? Or maybe you have a link to it?

Thanks,
Trey

is this the one you downloaded?:

http://www.nordkeyboards.com/downloads/software/nord%20modular/Nord%20Modular%20Editor%20OSX%20BETA.sit

im pretty sure thats the one im using. just make sure you set up the midi ports right in the preferences section (that took me a minute).

btw - if any other nomad users out there have any tips on how to get it running good on a mbp id love to hear them. . . i havent totally given up hope!

fyi i am running a mac dp g5 ppc with tiger

I have been using the nord beta for the modular g1 for about a year and JUST TODAY did I get nomad running.

tips on using the nord beta (just my experience)

NORD MODULAR EditorMacOSXD5

you can right click and
- rename things
- add modules
- delete cables

if you right click and do anything else the editor will crash

I just spent 2 hours getting nomad to work because I want to be able to batch download patches from the synth to my computer... that's one problem with the XD5 version, you can download a patch list but if the files aren't in the directory for some reason it wont save them to your computer. I am trying to avoid doing it one by one! now that I have it running I'm not sure I see a way to do that!? (pulls hair out) Wink

Some tips if you haven't gotten Nomad working -

1 Try plumstone or another java midi provider
2 make sure you only have 1 interface connected to the computer
3 try BOTH the osX version of nomad and the platform independent version (this is what finally did it for me. the osx version doesnt work, the java version does.)

1a if you are using plumstone it comes with a tester program to check to make sure it's working, this is what finally got me on the right track...

phew!
