Still a bargain. And yes, it will answer your questions, glasshopper.

Question Idea Exclamation Cool

Just a quick note of something I learned whilst researching this. If you wanted to do this with 12TET rather than Just Intonation (I don't), the MK50240 would be a good starting point.

I also note that 4000 series cmos is good up to at least 1.5MHz. Which is around 7 octaves above the audible range. So taking a high note up 4 octaves may make it inaudible, but should still work. After that you need to start reading data sheets.

OK. Building a Heterodyne Space Explorer did not take a month. I just got distracted by other projects and real world stuff. I posted a video of it in action over on the Heterodyne Space Explorer thread.

The next bit is going to take a while too, mostly because my music budget is severely depleted. Sad

But I can get on with planning. That doesn't cost anything. Sad

So here is the line-level to logic-level part of the yusynth clock divider drawn out on the Music From Outer Space Virtual Breadboard.

THIS IS UNTESTED AND PROBABLY FAULTY

Ever the optimist, I am hoping that voltage is not critical and it will work fine off a nive volt battery. Laughing

Circuit 2 - change signal from logic level to line-level with volume control and decoupling capacitor.

From Beavis Audio experiment 2

As before, untested and probably faulty!

(I used a resistor with a red wire coming from it to indicate a potentiometer as there is no graphic for a pot.)

Circuit 3. 4 channel mixer & logic level to line level w/ volume control.

From Heterodyne Space Explorer without diode mixing. Reversed pots. May need additional resistors.

This breadboard layout makes even less sense than the previous one! Really needs a "potentiometer" symbol. Sad

As before, untested and probably faulty!

Circuit 4. A one chip frequency divider! Huzzah.

Dial up a number, 0 to 15, on a 4-bit binary coded hex rotary switch, hit the "do it" button and the frequency is divided by the number you first thought of. Or one more than - a 4 octave drop would be nice but I don't entirely know if that's part of the deal. I'll settle for divide by 15 if it isn't.

Usual caveat - untested and probably faulty

Next up, a frequency multiplier that embeds circuit 4 in a PLL, and then count up components and order parts in time for the Brumalia festivities. Woo.

Circuit 5. When connected to circuit 4 (divider) makes a frequency multiplier.

Guess what - untested and probably faulty.

components

9v battery, battery connector, wire

Circuit 1
1/4" audio jack socket
2 * BC547C transistor
1N4148 diode
2 * 22k resistor
1.2M resistor
1M resistor
220 resistor

Circuit 2
10uF capacitor
100k log pot
330k resistor
160k resistor
1/4" audio jack socket

Circuit 3
5 * 100k log pots
4 * 330k resistor
1 * 10uF capacitor
1/4" audio jack socket

Circuit 4
4526B CMOS (down counter)
8 * 10k resistor
push to make switch
Binary coded hex switch

Circuit 5
4046B CMOS (phase-locked loop)
100nF capacitor
1nF capacitor
2 * 100k resistor
10M resistor
10k resistor

Single rational frequency shift = Circuit 1, Circuit 2, two of Circuit 4, Circuit 5.
Complete 4 tone harmoniser = Circuit 1, Circuit 3, eight of Circuit 4, four of Circuit 5.

(Note only one push to make switch is necessary, it can trigger all the down counters at the same time.)
