Here are some pics I took at the Philly Rotunda Space Rock - Nov 1, 2003
I don't think this concert was one of the best I've caught in this series, but there were moments where there was some good music.
Mutation Vector played during all of the breaks when the other bands were setting up or breaking down. They played mostly pleasant tonal rhythmic music. Very tastefully and well done. Too bad they were up in the balcony; unseen by most of the audience.
The Crime was very energetic and intense with a constant rock beat, lots of echo, loops, and distortion. Scattered Planet played quite a bit of stuff on a very repetitive beat from a drum machine. After listening to The Crime's set with a real live human playing drums, it was hard for me to dig the machine.
Church of Head did a interesting set. The highlight was when they backed up Lynette Shelley for one tune I really enjoyed. Shelly is a good singer with a very interesting stage presence. They did a song which I haven't heard before which had the refrain "I never wanna write another fuckin' rock and roll song". I hope I remember it correctly. Lynette and the Church did this one quite well.
The Church also did a tune with Richard Orlando, a virtuoso on the classic vintage Synti synthesizer from the 1970's. Richard plays hard-core analog synth music that didn't always seem to go with the rock style The Church was playing. No matter, I love to hear analog synthesis played so purely. I wish he had played solo like he did last year.
Micronesia was playing with a woman who played the guitar and violin. I didn't get her name. Maybe someone can post it here.
