Japan's domestic secondhand market is the deepest source of 1970s-1990s amps and direct-drive decks anywhere, and domestic prices are a fraction of what the same units fetch through Western specialist dealers. I quoted the whole chain on 29 August 2026 rather than guessing. Two things decide whether importing is worth it, and one of them talks most people out of it.

1) Every JDM unit is built for 100 volts.
Japan is 100 V, 50 Hz in the east and 60 Hz in the west. A 120 V outlet runs a 100 V amp roughly 20% over rated; 220-240 V destroys it instantly. Budget a step-down transformer as part of the purchase price, not as an afterthought.

Frequency matters less than people assume, but not never. Direct-drive decks with quartz speed control are electronically regulated and do not care what the mains is doing. Belt drives with AC synchronous motors follow the mains frequency and will run at the wrong speed on the wrong grid. Check which type you are buying before you buy.

2) Weight is the real tax.
Live listings on 29 August 2026: a Sansui AU-D607F Extra integrated at 14,000 yen (US$96.60), and a Technics SL-1200MK3D at 49,390 yen (US$340.79). Those are the numbers that make people start looking.

Then the freight. A ~14 kg amplifier quoted US$102.55 economy air to the US. A boxed SL-1200 at ~15 kg and 60x50x25 cm returned only express courier at US$164.28 - the economy lane refused it outright on dimensions, not on weight. So on the SL-1200 the shipping is roughly half the price of the deck again.

One trap worth flagging: do not consolidate heavy gear with the rest of an order. One 15 kg parcel is fine. One 30 kg parcel exceeds the EMS ceiling and forces courier pricing onto the whole lot, which is how a "saving" turns into a bigger bill.

Why the domestic pricing looks the way it does.
Between the mid-1970s and early 1990s Sansui, Technics, Denon, Pioneer, Marantz Japan, Luxman, Kenwood and Yamaha fought a domestic spec war that produced enormous quantities of over-engineered gear for the Japanese market only. Model designations with a series suffix - AU-alpha607, AU-D907, T-alpha7 - frequently never had an export counterpart. Forty years on those units get traded in at Japanese recycle chains and surface on Mercari, Yahoo! Auctions, Suruga-ya and 2nd STREET at domestic prices. In the West the same models pass through specialists who have restored them and priced accordingly.

Disclosure so it is on the table: I ran the price and freight quotes through OneMall, a Japan proxy-buying and forwarding service - the full write-up with the rest of the numbers is here, and the freight calculator I used is this one. Treat that as one source rather than a neutral one. The voltage and volumetric-weight maths is carrier and physics, not vendor spin, and it applies whoever you buy through.

Happy to re-run a freight quote for a specific unit and destination if anyone here is weighing one up.
