A slightly different one from me - not synths this time, but the portable Sony stuff a lot of us use as sound sources and cheap tape machines: cassette Walkmans for loops and dubbing, MD recorders as field recorders. I went through the Japanese listings this morning because the Walkman family is one of the very few areas where Japan genuinely has the stock and the rest of the world does not - Sony sold most generations domestically only, and MiniDisc never really left the country.

The prefix is the whole decoder ring.

WM- = cassette (1979 through the 90s). D- = Discman / CD. MZ- = MiniDisc (MZ-E are players, MZ-R and MZ-RH are recorders, RH = Hi-MD). NW-E and NW-S = the 2000s flash players. NW-A = the current mainstream hi-res line, NW-ZX and NW-WM1 = the flagship digital players. Once you know that, a listing that just says "SONY WALKMAN" with a photo of the back plate tells you the generation before you have read a word of Japanese.

What the listings are asking today (read 16 September 2026, all Mercari Japan private sellers unless stated):

Cassette:
- WM-EX600, described 極美品 (near mint) - 14,300 yen (US$98.67)
- WM-EX677, 整備品 (serviced) with the AA battery sled - 16,800 yen (US$115.92)
- WM-EX651, listed as ジャンク (junk / untested) but with the original pouch and accessories - 12,800 yen (US$88.32)
- WM-F203 radio-cassette, radio confirmed working, tape side sold as junk - 10,000 yen (US$69.00)

MiniDisc:
- MZ-E501 player, 動作確認済 (function confirmed) - 18,000 yen (US$124.20)
- MZ-R3 recorder, "plays music" - 30,000 yen (US$207.00)
- MZ-RH1 Hi-MD recorder, the one everyone wants because it is the deck that uploads your old SP/LP MD recordings to a computer - 159,800 yen (US$1,102.62). That number is not a typo. It has been climbing for years and this is where it sits now.

Flash and current:
- NW-E405, the 2005 capsule player - 13,300 yen (US$91.77)
- NW-A55, used, private seller - 14,500 yen (US$100.05), versus the same model from Suruga-ya (a chain shop, graded and with two in stock) - 26,800 yen (US$184.92). That gap is the flea-market-versus-shop spread in one line.
- NW-ZX507 64 GB, factory reset - 29,600 yen (US$204.24)

For scale: a sweep of 811 live listings on 11 September gave median asking prices of roughly 15,600 yen for cassette, 8,400 for CD, 14,900 for MD, 4,400 for the 2000s flash players, 12,800 for the A series and about 40,000 for ZX/WM1. Cassette medians are meaningless without condition, though - a serviced deck and an untested one carry the same model number and roughly a tenfold price gap.

The three words that decide the price.

動作確認済 = function confirmed, and Japanese sellers use it literally. ジャンク = junk, which in this hobby means "belts gone, untested, or both" - and because sellers apply the label honestly it is a real source of restorable decks rather than a trap. 整備品 = serviced (usually new belt and pinch roller on a cassette deck, which is 90% of what goes wrong on them). If you are buying a WM- for tape manipulation and can fit a belt yourself, ジャンク is where the value is; if you want it to play out of the box, pay for 整備品 or 動作確認済 and nothing else.

Two things on MD specifically, since I get asked: (1) the gum-stick NiMH batteries are dead in almost every used unit, and compatible cells are cheap and everywhere on the same sites; (2) if you want to actually record on MD in 2026, the blank discs are also effectively a Japan-only item now.

No 100 V problem for once.

Everything above runs on AA cells, gum-stick batteries or USB. The only mains items are the odd desk cradle and the old MZ-R AC adapters, and those you should replace anyway.

Getting one home.

Quoted this morning for a 350 g box to a Los Angeles zip: US$17.44 economy (10-20 days) or US$31.59 DHL (3-7 days). Two players in one 700 g box: US$20.99 economy, DHL unchanged at US$31.59. So the sensible pattern is the same as with pedals - collect a few small things in the warehouse and ship once.

Disclosure: I buy and forward through OneMall, a Japan proxy service, and my full model-by-model write-up of the Walkman family (with the medians above) is here; this is the MD search I keep open. Read it as one buyer's notes, not neutral advice. The prefix table and the condition vocabulary hold whoever you buy through.

If anyone is using a particular WM- model for loops or varispeed and wants to know what it is going for domestically, ask and I will look.
