Seems like the seller is a pro dealer in fancy gear.

The price is a bit over the top, but this EMS is unique. It does however not make sense that he hasn´t listed the previous owners. Shocked

Unless you are a rich collector, a modern DIY project will easily surpass what this EMS can do and it will probably sound much better. Restoring the EMS will probably not be cheap. However, this big machine is an important bit of em history.

I believe this is the second or third time this unit has been offered on Ebay.

Well, I guess this will have to be sent off to the Salvation Army then. Will he get a tax refund?

This is an excellent business idea for poor musicians who have lotsa vintage gear.

Hi nsiter! welcome to the forum Very Happy

I suppose you haven't seen the waiting list from EMS? Would you rather wait 2+ years or go for a have-it-in-a-couple-of-weeks 'buy it now'?

Your choice Idea

oh yeah 2+ years? crazy.

well.. if you want one, then i guess you have to wait or shell out for an AS IS 40year old model for "around" around the same price..

both are crazy IMO.

but then call me crazy. id wait the two years if i had the money. but i dont.

is that waiting list pay up front?

What? Money up front?

Yes. Shocked

Build a Soundlab instead (for less than a ton). That's my advice Very Happy

ha. sound lab. next project.

if a sound lab had 3 osc, then it would be closer to a synthi, yes?

But it does have 3 oscillators! The 3rd is an LFO, which like the synthi, can go into audio range. I can't however, be voltage controlled.

Hi,

Pardon me asking but I *would* quite like to see the waiting list for a VCS3, but the only website I can find seems rather out of date. It is still in production in secret in the depths of Cornwall?

.. the ems pages in the uk are old. try ems in germania. they are built there these days...

http://www.emsrehberg.de/index.html

i didnt see a wait list.. but i will imagine it is what v-un-v said.. it would seem logical considering the vcs3 sold real quick for 4500

I think the price of those machines (EMS) is a total rip-off. Remember, it's an iconic product that you are buying into- the electronics parts are the same as any other analogue synth. When the synthi first came out it cost £350, and there was not a lot else around at that price at that time. (compare that price with a Moog or Arp selling at the same time)

If I had 4500 euros, I would probably by a Nord G2 instead and go on holiday with the rest. People forget that this machine (VCS3) was designed by someone who hated patch cables- that's all, hence the way it looks. The Nord G2 you could say, is what Peter Zinovieff would have designed if EMS were now.

Alternatively, build a Soundlab instead, and patch it all up with banana plugs- you'll get the same sounds. Heck, even buy the EMS modules seperately from Analogue Systems!

Only buy a synthi if you really have no choice. But remember you may automatically place yourself on the ClassWar hit list! Shocked Laughing

I dunno. I certainly don´t think that a Synthi A or the like are actually worth the price asked, but still the price is not that farfetched considering that this is a low volume specialty business. Unless the Synthi A was truly mass produced this is a reasonable price no matter what. If you really want a new EMS Synthi A this is what you will have to pay. Actually, I hope there are enough mad and well off potential custmers out there in order to keep that german EMS business alive for years to come.

That said, I don´t think there is much wrong with the Synthi A itself. It is what it is. It certainly isn´t "worth" 3500 euro, but we also have to keep in mind that mass production has provided us with almost unreasonably inexpensive gear. We have been spoiled by caitalism.

Thanks nsiter.

I feel slightly fraudulent now; in truth I don't have 4500Euros at the moment. I was more interested from the point of daydreaming about what I would buy next if I did have 4500Euros. My bank balance is still hurting from the Macbeth M5 I picked up a month or so ago.

I suspect that a psychiatrist would have a field day but I'm not interested in the unattainable, hence the question.

Certainly if I was being a bit more careful with my daydream money I would be thinking about a Zeroscillator or other delightful West Atlantic toys (£/$)...but then I'd have to think about which format Confused

What a splendid idea! Idea Very Happy

Worth almost every penny I think. Although £350 or near would be a better price I think (then I would buy one Very Happy ).

There is a link there to info about how nasty the originals were. They used low cost components and VCO3 is not even temperature compensated. I wonder if the new ones are exactly the same, or if they bumped up the quality a bit.

well there are some Diy pages here... sound lab was mentioned... and there are a few people who have built their own clones of synthi and vcs3.. i guess you might save only a bit of money as the matrix patch bay is fairly expensive (and making your own is a pain i gather).. i would imagine the clone isnt so far off, and one could add whatever tweaks to it.. plus, as with any vintage equipment, i would imagine the old units are slightly a pain, so if you were to build your own, you would be able to trouble shoot quite easily if something was to break.. i would think that when you were done you would have a fairly crystal knowledge of the workings, which would help when it came time to play around and make some sounds...

i have never used one, but although the price is quite ridiculous these days (thanks rich old b stard collectors!- and i say "collectors" not musicians- just imagine what some of these young guys who make music could do with one IF they could afford one), the music that i know for certain ems gear was used on is really amzing.. (like stockhausen's sirius - synthi100, propeller island- hermaneutic music and much of conrad schnitzler's earlier works, as well as the sound efx to doctor who (at least through the 1970s) with the bbc's synthi100)

but yeah check out the Diy pages.. of course EMS is EMS but there are enough people out there who have the documentation for whatever.. like who can really afford those buchla devices? but ive seen webpages with documents and pictures of all the circuit boards for the old modular that i believe morton subotnik used on silver apples..

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm very old, so I've got an excuse, but I seem to remember that a Synthi 100 was temporarily exported to the US for a music expo, and EMS was at a low financially, and couldn't afford for the Synth to be shipped back to the U.K. so it was left in storage, could this be that Synth, does anyone know?
