My bump is in for now.
These colleges are always wanting us to put our "Professional Societies" down on paper. I thought I might join ICMA (International Computer Music Association) in January because I have submitted to their conference and figured that I'd get a discount on the conference and would be interested to read their journal when it comes out, until I found out that membership wouldn't even get me the journal, and not much of a discount on it. electro-music is way more useful than an ICMA membership.
Call it a Professional Society and I'll try to make my bump regular. _________________ When the stream is deep

Got your bump, Dale. Thanks.
Now that you are a member of the electro-music.com professional society, How would you like to be the managing editor of the electro-music.com technical journal?

Wow, that actually is a really great idea...There's so much information that could be gathered this way -- types of synthesis, technologies, wow. wow! I'd be glad to contribute to a "periodical" of this caliber! |

Thanks, Dale, for becoming the editor, and to the rest for expressing an interest in providing articles. Dale and I will talk about the details.
I just want to clear up something. One can be a professional musician, technician, or engineer without being commercial. Most of us don't make a living off of these experimental music activities, but we do strive for excellence and professionalism. At the expense of pushing this: we don't do this to make a living, but we live to do this.
Thus, if we do publish a technical journal, it should be as professional as any other WRT to quality, but we will strive never to reject an article. If it isn't up to snuff, we'll work with the author until it is. While commercial and academic organizations are into "accept or reject", we will accept or encourage and support. _________________ --Howard

In for a penny, in for a pound
I'd like to have some open discussion before going further, but I am not sure where to start the thread. Schoomze is fine, the electro-music.com forum page is perhaps more appropriate. The main goal is that it should be noticed by potentially interested parties.
What I have been thinking about while cross-country skiing and walking the dogs, is to try to harvest the expertise that is distributed on this site by having themed issues of the Electro-Music Technical Journal , with the articles/papers for an issue written by the experts in those themed areas, and also referreed by a panel of referees with expertise in that area. The job of the Managing Editor is to Delegate! A quick scan of the Forum index gives an outline of possible themes.
I agree about no rejections. Actually, in my experience with refereed academic journals versus conference papers, the journals will give authors of promising papers suggestions and time for revision. Conferences sometimes do not because they run on shorter time frames, but even conferences give editorial feedback to papers they accept. It is only the blankety-blank grant proposals that get rejected out of hand with little to no opportunity for revision or clarification.
I was pondering what would differentiate information in a themed journal from what one would find by just looking at posts in a subforum. The only answer I could come up with, is that experts in a subforum write tutorials, research, or other technical papers based on their expertise, and other experts vet them, so that the rest of us who do not dwell in those subforums get exposed to the cream of their crop.
This discussion really needs its own thread. If an admin has a good idea of where to put it, that is good with me. Feel free to split the thread.
Incidentally, I have been drafted onto technical committees for conferences before, most recently for a trade show on "software defined radio" that wants to add a research/academic track this year. So, I have some combat experience, but not as Managing Editor or somesuch.
Also incidentally, I suspect that Howard's choice of name was inspired by The Bell Labs Technical Journal, something that he and I both read avidly in our days there. It was equal parts research and practical engineering, to which we can add practical composition and performance skills. _________________ When the stream is deep

I'm usually reluctant to commit to being a paying member of anything. I could do an ad hoc donation when needed.
You know I just very recently saw the EM frontpage has a Paypal "make a donation" option?
The reason I overlooked this for so long is I never see the front page, but head straight to the forum, navigating with the links in the page header.
My suggestion is make the donation option available on each page of the site. |

I'd like to add that electri-fire (Mathe) has "greased the wheels" of electro-music by prepaying me for goods and services. This helped me with expenses contributing to the Karplus Strong board that we are working on in the eChucK forum. Thanks, Mathe! Your stuff will be on the way soon.

Which statue? Thinking Man? Liberty? Maybe a walking Liberty like in Ghostbusters II? |
