Bill!! Help me. I'm drowning!!

Having got a tiny amount of time to finish this kit, I'm stumped once more on my old friend, the capacitor. Sad

The list says 8 or so disc capacitors, but I am seeing more that look like mylar than disc. Is this normal? Which is what, because they all have different markings on them. I hate capacitors! Shocked Laughing

Hi Tom, OK, sorry for any confusion. I probably substituted the Myalrs in place of the ceramic disc capacitors since the type of capacitor was not at all critical and thus is sometimes normal for me to do. Trouble is, I assume, wrongly, that this is OK for everyone.

Tom, If you list the markings on the capacitors in question, I can then match those to the proper reference designations for you.

I assume you do not have a capacitance meter for now?

Chat more,
Bill

Yeah, I think to a lot of people, especially newcomers to electronics, capacitors are the most confusing to work out or order of the lot (am I right?)

102 JCE (x2)
R40 RDN (101 A1K) x2
471 A1K (x2)
H23 AHP
473 C5K
V39 AHO

2A203K T (green)

I can work out the caps that have 224K and 474K written on them, but I'm stumped on these others. The very first are minuscule, and I need powerful magnifying glass to read them, so I can't guarantee that I have the readings correct.

Tom Very Happy

I believe this to be correct Tom:

102 JCE (x2)
[C6, C7]
.001 uF

R40 RDN (101 A1K) x2
[C1, C2]
100 pF

471 A1K (x3)
H23 AHP
[C3, C4, C5] (Can all be the same type, even though they are specified as disc and poly)
470 pF

473 C5K
V39 AHO
[C14]
.047 uF

I went out and bought a new multimeter (which I should have done in the first place), but that was after I had to use a sink plunger to re-align my eyeball after reading these things! Laughing

Cheers Bill! Very Happy

OK man on the meter !!! lol .... It's just nice to have the right tools available. I just invested in a couple of decent resistive decade boxes for my breadboards. Invaluable at times. Wink

Yes, C16, it is BIG, it's not too big is it? Can you muscle it onto the PC board OK? I know it's like a 100V 0.47 uF mylar and they tend to be big. I remember spacing the pads out quite wide for that one. Wink

Yeah, I got it on the board....

cue the fanfare.....

Tom has finally finished a board!!! Hooray!! party!

Laughing

Now I gotta decide on that PWM/6 octaves thingie. I've got a rotary switch, so I can probably do it. I've also been toying with the idea of using cakeboards as the front panels. They look totally mad too (crazy silver) Laughing Perhaps, perhaps not, but I'm working on getting a workshop together too, at the place where I work.

Bill, this may not be of interest to you, but have you seen this crazy thing;

http://reprap.org/wiki/Mendel

The workshop would be within a school for kids with special needs (autism). I hoping to get a RepRap kit, and build it up with the kids. But all that won't be for a while yet.

This IS actually very interesting. Will the kit be made by another RepRap printer? Self cloned. I assume you would like to have a model 2 unit?

Very cool stuff. Cool

Oh, congrats on building your SN Voice board man !!! Have fun. Wink

Yes. There's some company in the States, that is are already producing kits from a 'mother' printer. It's a brilliant idea, and there's already a prize out of $80,000 to the first person who builds an even better design Cool

http://reprap.org/wiki/Gada_Prize

I have major WANT for a 3D printer! Cool

I'd love a laser cutter too! Very Happy

Oh my friggin' gawd, Tom! How'd you get THAT big a cap into the board all by yourself?? Surprised Last time _I_ tried to lift a cap that big, I had to call up Byrd and get them to send a crane over to help me! Laughing

Hey there bill, I'm running into a very similar problem with some of my capacitors and was wondering if you could help me out. I believe I have them all because the numbers are right, but....

I'm using the 2009 Revision "B" board.

I checked off all the ones I was certain were right on the parts list, so I've narrowed it down a bit. Only the top 5 on the parts list need to be figured out (just realized you listed the value of the 102 JCE).

Heres what it says on the parts list and following will be the codes on my caps:

C1,C2 100 pF disc
C3, C4 470 pF disc
C5 470 pF poly
C8-C12,C23,C24 0.01 uF disc

.01K (X2 , little red)
103 M50C / A909 (back) (X2, little blue)
103 M50C / A941 (back) (X3, little blue)
923AMP / 671A1K (back) (X5, little tan)

Also, if you could verify another part. U5 isn't listed on the new parts list, but I believe it is the Ki39 / LM7IL / 05ACZ / (from top to bottom). It looks like the 2N3904 with legs in a black casing.

Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

Yes. Yes it was helpful. It helped me a get a couple of them figured out, but capacitors are really the bane of me. I only have a basic multimeter that doesn't do capacitance. I should have though about that before I bought one.

Hoping to figure them out so I can get to soldering.

I suspect that the LM7IL / 05ACZ part you mentioned is actually a 78L05 voltage regulator.

The SN-Voice needs a +5V supply for some devices, this is what the 78L05 provides.

On the Capacitors, I can give a bit of guidance that may help.

for the caps that start 103, this stands for 10 with 3 extra zeros, so 10,000. This is actually measure in Picofarads, so this equates to 10,000 pf, or 10n or 0.01uF. I believe the A codes are actually data codes from when they were manufactured (2009, weeks 09 ,and 41). These are probably ceramic capacitors from your description, a more modern design than the older brown disks (and probably a better quality)

Regards

Magman

Thanks guys. I was away in Boston and was not on the internet much. Seems like the questions have been answered! Thanks very much Magman. That is correct BTW, the device described is the voltage regulator. Thanks also for explaining on how to read the capacitor values. I should really not assume everyone is expert on how to ID the parts and should include a cheat sheet of some kind with each order.

Yes thanks for that explanation. I stumbled upon a capacitor calculator that had that same explanation.

My problem still exists however. See if the your description is correct then: the blue caps and my red caps (listed above) satisfy C8-C12,C23,C24 as 0.01 uF caps.

But then.... I have 5 of the same cap (or so I can read on their tiny case) that represent different values, both 470pF and 100pF.

Should I look to make sure that they actually aren't the same?

EDIT: Solved the problem. With a fresh set of eyes (I was looking at them around at 9:50 PM last time) I used my magnifying glass to read out the labels on the 5 tan ones. Sure nough, 3 had 471 (47 with 1 leading zero, 470pF) and 2 had 101 (10 with 1 leading zero, 100pF).

Thanks for your help guys, now to finish up the build.
