Deregulation |
 |
|
I seem to be on a rampage since hearing Don Slepian speak the other night at the Princeton Songwriters meeting. I just wrote the following in a private message.
| Quote: | | So far, the internet is quite unlike Clear Channel which banned the Dixie Chicks for having, holding, and <GASP> expressing (in public, no less!) a point of view different from what the powers at Clear Channel believe. Sucks, man! THIS is what happens because Regan/Bush deregulated communications. We now have a homogenious voice blaring at us from several (if not all) the radio stations in most every market. We are now one market, marching lock step to one drummer... except for those of us who at least try to think for ourselves. I'm in public radio because commercial radio sucks and won't have me and my crazy boring music that won't sell soap, beer, or deodorant. |
I recently received email from a local band. I think that they're VERY good. I play their records on my progressive rock radio shows and think their compositions are fine examples of what rock radio SHOULD be playing. But, due to the lock of radio moguls and the state of mind of major labels, this band's record deal almost happened but never materialized. Now they're running around trying to raise $30k so that they can hire a first shelf producer and create a CD that can compete against CDs that major labels fund at ten times that level. If this is how the music industry is run, Genesis, Steely Dan, Yes, or the Beatles would NEVER get off the ground if they were starting out today. So it's up to us to support independent thinkers, independent labels and artists. The diversity points of view they provide are the light of the human race. _________________ Bill Fox------------------|\-------------

Quite possibly Genesis and the lot would never had any chance these days. There is an interesting analysis at http://www.airwindows.com/analysis/index.html. This guy has some very good points here. From a scientific view I guess there are some serious holes in some of the data.. but he does make a good case about his thing about artist development.. recommended reading. Hey.. this dude makes some seriously good software too.
One of the main problems is that the music biz has never solved the distribution issue. Most pro business segments work seriously with getting the product out there.. to the customers/consumers. Instead the music biz goes for a mass market.. or creating a mass market for their desired product(s). And creating a mass market for nonsensical artificial products is always expensive.
What makes most sense? Creating a market for a focused artificial product? -Or getting a diverse range of products out to a distributed market? Optimising the business for a global diverse distributed market is what I personally would think is the most professional approach.
Music is not dead.. just the business. Hmm.. I am pretty sure Buggles never recorded " The music biz killed the music biz".. Hmm.. ? |

Ahhhh... right.... forgot this one.. enjoy
| Quote: | Derek Warfield?s Music Banned From Aer Lingus Flights
Comparing Derek Warfield?s music to speeches of Osama Bin Laden, an Ulster Unionist politician, Assembly member Roy Beggs Jr., complained to Aer Lingus. As a result of that complaint, the Irish State airline, with flights from Ireland to major American cities, has taken the music of Derek Warfield of the Wolfe Tones off the in flight channel that has played his music for almost three years.
Derek Warfield has spent the last 40 years bringing the Irish Ballad tradition to audiences all over the world. His 38 years as leader of The Wolfe Tones and subsequent solo career have made him no less than a legend in Irish music worldwide.
According to a spokesperson at his North American record label Kells Music, "Mr. Warfield is a strong believer in the Irish Ballad tradition. The history of Ireland has been best related through song, as other methods, such as free press and publishing were banned through much of Irish history. While some with specific political agendas may find these songs disturbing they are in fact a part of Irish history and culture."
The spokesperson goes on to say, "Anyone not interested in listening to a sponsored flight channel (which Aer Lingus charges handsomely to be on) after reading the description of the channel can simply choose one of many others."
Kells Music has in release three Derek Warfield solo recordings and distributes three others. The newest, released on St. Patrick?s Day this year is "A Nation Once Again" and is selling in record numbers. Previous Kells Music Warfield releases include "Clear The Way" and "Take Me Home To Mayo".

The town I live in has, I think, 4 Clearchannel stations. The news coverage (sic) on the news-talk station, WAEB, is totally biased toward the Bush agenda. Every once in a while they get someone on to interview who is identified as a "liberal" - an adjective that means "stupid, intellectual, communist, terrorist scum bag".They usally interrupt them, insult them and identify them as anti-American or worse. Then they carry on about how great America is because, unlike any other inferior country, we have free speech, and how great they are for bringing us diverse opinions, even by poeple who support terrorists and Sadam. _________________ --Howard

I picked up this piece of news at the Music Dish website:
| Quote: | Clear Channel Communications Inc. announced today that its radio stations would no longer work with independent promoters after several prominent members of Congress expressed concern over the longstanding industry practice.
Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Russ Feingold (D-WI) each have raised questions about whether radio station contracts with record company "middlemen" affect the amount of airplay given to particular songs.

At the risk of digging up a dead thread, I just wanted to mention that this sort of thing may not be as daunting and negative as it may at first appear.
After all, the sooner the status quo in the media achieves critical-mass, the sooner they will disintegrate. That's what I expect anyway. Ballast, ballast, ballast, and down it will eventually go. So it is with all things.

Interesting about dead threads. Some forums lock topics if they are inactive for a certain amount of time, say two months. You can still read them, but if you want to say something you have to start a new topic. It makes it easier to follow the site if you are a frequent reader. Our site is relatively new. I haven't felt the need to do this. This is a short thread, so it was easy to catch up and review, but I can see it might be different if the thread was 3 or 4 or more pages long.
Anyway, Cyx, you have a very good point. It's probably healthier for us to notice these things without getting negatively affected.
At a Landmark Forum class I recently attended, they said that when something is constant or unchanging, like breathing, we tend to ignore it. Certainly this is the case with commercial radio.
This is something we must just deal with, like anything else we can't control, not fret over.
Still, I wouldn't mind seeing Clearchannel go broke, or at least blow a fuse. |

Yes, it's when things move at a snail's pace when we tend to not notice. Of course, we have a reason to notice, we have an agenda, albeit a healthy and noble one, as opposed to the millions of other's with a "why should I care? What's the big deal, anyway?" attitude.
